Altharetta Art Museum

On Monday, September 27th, our class visited the Yeargin Art Museum. We are one of the only districts in the United States to have their own museum. Altharetta Yeargin was an art teacher in SBISD. She traveled extensively and brought back many pieces of art from the places she visited. She generously decided to donate these pieces to SBISD. Some items include a painting by Grandma Moses, black pottery by Native American Maria Martinez, quilts, carved tusks, and archeological treasures. The museum is located on the Westchester Campus, and they offer family activites throughout the year.
The students viewed a movie on how Maria Martinez made her pottery. It followed the process from finding the right mixture of clay and sand, to firing the pottery, and finally using yucca leaves to draw on the designs.
The children also had the opportunity to make their own pottery out of paper and design it with special gel markers.  The finished products will be displayed at school for everyone to enjoy!
